Year 1 News
Year One have loved being artists this half term. We have been developing our drawing skills by exploring colour, pattern, texture and line using a range of media.
We began our art sessions by exploring drawing spirals of different sizes. We used different sized paper to draw spirals, starting with giant ones and ending with tiny ones. We noticed how big spirals require your whole body, shoulders and arms and as the spirals get smaller you eventually only need to move your fingers. Big spirals really make your arm ache!
We then moved on to observing spirals in nature and experimented with using pastels to create spirals. We carefully smudged and blended whilst making sure we didn’t lose our spiral shapes.
Next, we revisited media previously explored, to do observational drawings of feathers. It was great fun exploring how pencils, charcoal and black pen can be used and layered using smudges and quick strokes to really create the lines and texture of a real feather. Our teachers loved this lesson too because we were as quiet as little mice as we concentrated hard!
The next step in our artistic journey took us onto introducing colour to our feather drawing. The peacock feathers were beautiful and we created some stunning pictures.
Finally, we applied our skills of creating feathers to make our own little imaginary bird sculpture. We can’t wait to show you the finished result.
