Year 1 News
In Year One we have been artists. Our work on leaves has been our favourite part of the unit. We began by using pen to draw the outline of a leaf, looking carefully at its overall shape. The children then focused on the finer details, noticing the textures and adding as much detail as they could. Special attention was given to the edges of the leaves, observing whether they were smooth, jagged, or rough. This encouraged careful observation and helped develop their drawing skills. They then moved on to wax resist techniques, using metallic crayons to capture the veins and patterns of the leaves. Brusho crystal colours were added over the wax, creating vibrant washes of Autumn colours. The resist effect revealed beautiful textures and contrasts, much to the children’s delight! Each child showed creativity by choosing their own colours for their leaf paintings. They loved seeing how the colours blended and resisted, producing unique and striking Autumn leaves.
